How do you like Hurricane Catharina being used as boogieman by environmentalists?

NHC concluded that it is likely that much of the city experienced sustained winds of Category 1 or Category 2 strength. - Wikipedia.

First of all, hurricanes are possible there. There is no connection between global warming and hurricanes.

Hurricane Category 1 or Category 2 brings the mess, but not the mass tragedy. I’ve been in Miami thru Wilma and Catharina, we lost poser, lost some trees and some people got the house damaged.

The real tragedy came from the flooding, which was a result of broken levees. The government was supposed to properly build and maintain the levees.

The real tragedy comes from is ignorant people, who did not care about taking care about their city, not the whole planet.

This tragedy would happen regardless of the pollution.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina
Hah… I did not dispute global warming as many like to think. I disputed the connection between the tragedy and global warming, which actually makes it global warming more REAL. Why not connect global warming and September 11. This will definitely do the job with the government we have.

The main point, which connects September 11, tragic flooding and global warming is simple plain IGNORANCE.

Gustav Hurricane- Category 4

The mystery grows because the options for category four Gustav now have four options. A hig pressure ridge to the North will make or break what might happen. Specifically for New Orleans, Gustav could be worse than Katrina (much worse) or it coud be a non-event for the city. Unfortunately, at this time, no one knows which option will prevai. Let’s look at the four possibiliites.

1-New Orleans is spared!

There are at lest two dozen models to look at and one fo them has Gustav being pushed around by the high pressure ridge causing it to either veer to the West or to stall and head South like it did before wandering between Hatai and Cuba. Only one of the twele modles predicted that Southerly turn. If the storm heads West, Houston could take a major hit.

2-New Orleans is slightly damaged!

Guustav veers slightly to the West, coming in just West of New Iberia and Lafayette wherein Lake Charles takes a major hit and New Orleans is spared of any major damage.

3-New Orleans is hit hard!

Gustav comes in exactly as the current (noon Saturday) projection has it as a category 3 hurricane dead center or a little east Of New Iberia.

4-New Orleans is wiped out!

If Gustav move 25-75 lies East from what the current projection is, coming in West of New Orleans, the city would face a potential storm surge twice that of Katrina. TWICE! Gulf currents would be shoved into Lake Pontchartrain, thus flooding the city wose than before. Let the evacuations begin!

All four of those scenarios only talk about landfall. Then what? Then what indeed.

The high pressure ridge could cause the storm to stall bring more than TWO FOOT of rain to some areas, and push Gustav back out to sea temporarily. As the high pressure ridge subsides, Gustav makes an about face and comes ashore for a second hit and to where it hits then is anyone’s guess. The storm could also come ashore and wander to the West and basically die out flooding East Texas.

Did I mention Gustav is now a category four hurricane?

Is there any good news in there? Currently, it all depends on where you live. :-(

Hurricane Preparedness

A hurricane is a deadly type of tropical storm that frequently strikes Central America, the Caribbean, and the Southeastern coast line of the United States. Hurricanes cost millions (and sometimes billions) of dollars of damage to homes and businesses each year, and claim many lives. The key to survival and minimal property damage during a hurricane is preparedness. With a little time and money, you can secure your home and protect your family from the threat of a hurricane.

Invest In Hurricane Window Protection

Hurricane shutters are an investment, but they are still the best type of hurricane window protection for your home. Functional hurricane shutters are available in many styles and at various price ranges. First and foremost, you’ll want to check with your city for any local building codes related to hurricane window protection products. Some areas have lists of approved products that you’ll want to choose from. Second, consider the type of opening you have to cover. In some cases there may be size restrictions or limitations on the type of installation that can be done. Will you be doing the installation or hiring a contractor to do it for you? If the latter is the case, you’ll want to consult with the installer before making a purchase. Some installers might be able to get you special discounted pricing on certain types of shutters.

Clean Up Your Yard and Landscaping

The biggest cause of damage in a hurricane is high wind and the flying debris that is picked up by the wind. Hurricane planning and preparedness begins when you landscape your home. For example, don’t plant large landscape trees close to your home. Falling branches can break windows or even cave a roof in.

Preparing your yard is another important step. When you know a hurricane is approaching, go outside and look around with a careful eye. What objects could become projectiles if picked up by the wind? Lawn ornaments and decorations such as birdbaths, gazing balls, small statues, and birdhouses and feeders should all be brought indoors before a storm. Also remember to secure or bring in grills, patio furniture, umbrellas, children’s toys and play equipment, and potted plants. If you have outdoor pets, you’ll also want to plan ahead of time for them, too. If you think you may have to evacuate your home, consider boarding your pets at a kennel or veterinary office that is prepared for hurricanes.

Create a Family Emergency Plan

Developing an emergency plan for your family is critical to hurricane preparedness. Each member of your family should know where to go in the event of a hurricane. Preferably, this location should be a room in your home without any windows. Basements, closets, or the area underneath stairs are all good choices. Be sure to stock this spot with a first aid kit, bottled water, flashlights (with extra batteries), a weather radio or battery operated television, and some food supplies (dried and canned are the best options because of the long shelf life).

Evacuate If Necessary

Lastly, don’t be a hero. If your city or county is recommending that everyone evacuate, then heed their warning. Many lives were lost during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 because people refused to evacuate their homes. While no one wants to leave their home and risk it being destroyed, it’s still far better that you are not inside when damage occurs. There are many storm shelters set up by municipalities where residents can go to weather a storm. Plan ahead by knowing the locations of your nearest storm shelters and their emergency phone numbers.

Many lives are unnecessarily lost each year to hurricanes. Remember, preparedness is the key in minimizing property damage and loss of life in emergency situations. Take the time to do some advance planning. With a small investment in time and money, you can prepare your home and family and protect yourself against the threat of a hurricane.

Summer: The Season Of Hurricane

Summer is a popular season for vacations. Children get their summer holidays and adults usually utilize their leaves at work during this hot season. The most attractive choice for a family vacation is cruises. Most of the cruise liners offer a variety of choices for fun and travelling. However, hurricane is a potent problem during a cruise vacation. The official summer months in the Caribbean are from 1st of June till the 30th of November. This is the season for hurricanes.

Storm incidents

If you were an optimist then perhaps you would ignore this warning. But hang on, even cruise liners can sink. Let us review certain facts that would make you think.

A ship named Phantom belonging to the Windjammer cruise line sunk in 1998. This was an eye-opener to all. It was a reminder that man is helpless against the fury of nature. The passengers were dropped safely on the shore but the ship never returned. Nor did the captain and his crews. All was lost in the hurricane.

A Carnival Cruise ship faced a similar problem in 1999. Luckily, The crew members and the passengers managed to sail through the hurricane safely.

Caribbean cruise vacation

Incidents on a cruise vacation make people jittery. However, you must not be over cautious, as the cruising industry would not jeopardize the life of passengers travelling with them.

Most of their ships use the best technology and skills. This is to ensure you a memorable experience that you would love to have again on a cruise liner. Moreover, the cruisers are offered attractive discounts during the months of August till December. So, you may just feel brave to embark on a cruise.

Hurricanes are an inconvenience

Nevertheless, storms do affect ships. Your cruise course may get altered affecting your vacation plans. In fact your departure may be cancelled owing to a brewing squall. However, weather forecast and foresight could avoid hurricanes but cannot rule them out.

Trip cancellation

The safety of the ship along with its crew and the passengers are a priority for any shipping company. Even the slightest hint of a storm can be risky. So, your trip can be cancelled without any hesitation or prior information. Therefore a reserved ticket on a cruise liner is not the final assurance.

The two most sensible things that you can do:

To avoid unnecessary risks, do not make any advance payments or deposits for your summer cruise vacation

You must be mentally prepared that your cruise may get cancelled. So, you need another vacation plan to fall upon.

Hurricane Preparation: How many gallons of water should one put away?

I went to the store today, and people were hovering over the bottled water. How much per person is adviced to purchase should a hurricane hit your area? I saw one family with about three kids purchase about 3 gallons. I saw an elderly man, purchase a whole basketful, probably about 20 gallons.
Should there be a limit on how many a person can purchase if they wait till the last minute to purchase?

What are the risk and challenges one must face when riding out a hurricane?

When a hurricane hits any coastal city in the United States, it is advised either mandatory or voluntarily to evacuate from where you are located.

Throughout history of major hurricanes such as Hurricane Andrew (1992), Hugo (1989), Opal (1995) and Katrina (2005), many residents of coastal cities stayed even though they were told to leave.

Where can I get free home repairs caused by hurricane Wilma?

I’ve looked into the state federal programs-there’s nothing I qualify for
or that is available.

Looking for someone who can donate time to do or help do repairs.
Even someone who has knowledge of how things should be done, would be helpful.
(Most of repairs not incredibly difficult, but do require someone who has done this
stuff before)

I need some stucco repaired, drywall in one room, some damaged wood replaced,
some holes dug for replacement fence posts and some assistance repairing the fence.
Also need to replace some window cranks for according windows.
And need some plywood cut to cover windows in case of future hurricane.
(I have plywood-I’m just not able to cut it)

I could probably pay something, but not allot.
I have misc items that could be used for trade: golf clubs bag ,
bowling balls, several clothes dryers that need minor repairs, misc garage stuff.

Hurricanes - Be Prepared Before The Storm Hits

With the two most active months of hurricane season occurring in August and September, it is important to prepare early. The hurricane season is never predictable, so it is best to have a family plan of action, along with necessary supplies before the first watches are issued.

A good start is to stock up on needed items before the hurricane season begins. The following is a list of supplies most commonly used during a storm:

Batteries

Flashlights

Radios

Canned Food

Bottled Water

Generator

Gas

Coolers

Water-proof storage containers

Can openers

Cell phone and charger

Understand that many people wait until the last minute to purchase supplies for a Hurricane so buying early will ensure you will not be running from store to store when these items have already sold out.

Many times during the hurricane season, areas expected to be effected by the storm will be issued an evacuation. It is a good idea to have a plan of action for your family, including an evacuation route so that you will know ahead of time which route to take along with any stops that you will make. Be sure to have ready a map, telephone numbers of places you plan to stop at and a personal evacuation kit containing anything your family will need if you have to leave your home. Recommended items to include are:

Prescription medicines and first aid kit

Food & water to last at least 24 hours

Clothing and bedding, including sleeping bags or blankets and pillows

Car keys and vehicle maintenance check-up

Cash/checkbook/ATM/debit/credit cards

Should you have to evacuate your home it is also important to take with you all important documents regarding your family and home such as:

Birth Certificates

Social Security Cards

Insurance policies

Car registration and titles

Deeds or leases to your home

Any papers pertaining to warranties of any large items that you own

Medical records

Remember that it is better to be safe than sorry. Being prepared is one of the best steps to take to ensure you and your family’s safety.
