Hurricane Hanna
With all of the attention on Gustav, has anyone been watching Hanna? Hanna formed in a location in the Atlantic that usually means it will blow Northwest and die out in the North Atlantic somewhere only causing an inconvenience for ships in the area. Ah, but none of the hurricanes have been acting as we think they should and what was once believe an impossibility, now isn’t. And that is?
Hanna could follow Gustav into the Gulf of Mexico!
And before it gets there, Haiti could get slammed for the second time in ten days. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is now projecting a path that would do exactly that- which was not in the cards five days ago. What was a relatively quiet Hurricane season for Haiti changed dramatically when a tropical wave surprised everyone and instantly gained strength and became Tropical Storm Fay, leaving a trail of death across the island.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida was forecasting that Tropical Storm Hanna will reach hurricane strength soon and that it will turn more northerly (295º) from its current westward heading (270º) taking it well north of Haiti. Earlier this week the NHC had to significantly modify its forecast track for Gustav as it took a southerly route after leaving Haiti, putting Jamaica in its deadly path which they had forecast Gustav to miss just a few days earlier.
In less than two weeks Gustav roared into the southern coat and lingered over the Southwest part of the island. For some unknown reason the major news media have been deflecting the reports away from the situation in Haiti in an attempt to reclaim the headlines during the lead-up to the Republican Convention in Minnesota on Monday. Gustav left dozens dead and billions in dmaage to a country that can ill afford any damage.
The bottom line is what’s bad for Hati is going to be bad for the United States as well and we’ll know that all too well very shortly. And after Gustav, Hanna may pay a visit!
